The GDC has been given custody of over 50,000 offenders. Approximately 12,000 of them have been diagnosed with mental illness or an intellectual disability. Having custody of an individual carries with it the legal, ethical, and moral obligations to provide physical and psychological care of the person. The GDC provides mental health services that are consistent with the needs of the offender and that meet the current community standards of mental health treatment.
